Diagnostic Changes
In 2013, dissociative identity disorder was updated in the fifth edition of the DSM (the DSM-5). One of the most significant updates was the removal of the switching criteria. Prior to the DSM-5, a person was required to switch between alternate identities in front of the clinician in order to receive a diagnosis. However, switching is actually one of the least frequent symptoms of DID, occurring in only about 15% of diagnostic interviews [1]. This means that, before 2013, many people with DID were unable to receive the correct diagnosis from clinicians using the DSM.
Community
Origin Labels
In 2014, a new set of labels was introduced to the community by Lunastus Collective [2]. These labels emphasized the origins of one's plurality, with the most popular of them being endogenic and traumagenic. "Endogenic" refers to plurality that was not caused by trauma, and "traumagenic" refers to plurality that was trauma-caused. The Lunastus Collective goes into detail about the coining of these terms in their interview on this webpage.
